Need for Physician and Executive Assistance:
The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) has found that while many physicians are able to achieve a satisfactory balance in personal and professional lives and thus stay healthy in their roles, colleagues who have not found such balance are increasing. In more difficult instances, these colleagues may be suffering through career-jeopardizing experiences such as stress, emotional and physical exhaustion (burnout), chemical dependency, major depression, or emotional illness.
When such behavior betrays inner turmoil and impacts peers and staff in an abusive manner or destabilizes the workflow in a hospital or corporate office in a disruptive manner, it is important for medical and corporate leaders to act capably, responsibly and accordingly.
For some physicians and executives, disruptive behavior may be a symptom of a more serious problem. Coping mechanisms may be compromised and a person may actually lose control of his/her conduct. There may be an unrecognized health problem or inadequately treated. There is a responsibility to confront and manage this behavior before adverse outcomes signal its presence and/or progression.
